It’s been more than 2 months since the most recent Marvel film called Doctor Strange 2 – landed in cinemas. We’ve also been able to watch Ms Marvel to tide us through on Disney Plus in the interim time, seeing the most recent MCU feature in a movie is always an exciting experience. In our opinion, at least.
What’s the latest information regarding this Marvel Phase 4 production? There’s plenty to talk about in the film, in fact. With Thor Love and Thunder’s premiere scheduled for June 23 and the crew and cast currently participating in an event to promote the film (not because the movie is in need of it, of course!) We’ve learned a lot about the film’s superheroes.

THE THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER TRAILER
Thor: Love and Thunder trailer: watch it here
It was released on the 24th of May. Thor: Love and Thunder’s official trailer is filled with hilarious, thrilling, a little scary, and truly thrilling moments.
The trailer opens with a story that comes from Taika Waititi’s Korg The trailer gives suggests what Thor’s been doing since the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. It’s not long, but the reunion together with Jane Foster and the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as the MCU’s wide array of gods will pull Thor from retirement as they force Thor to take on an all-new, terrifying foe with Gorr who is the God Butcher.
Christian Bale’s Gorr is the main highlight of the trailer’s reveal. We’d only seen a few leaked images of the latest MCU big villain prior to when the official trailer was revealed which is why it’s so satisfying to have a glimpse at him prior to the film comes out later this year. Let’s hope he’s just as terrifying and dangerous as the actors and crew have claimed him to be.
The only thing that’s scary (depending on whom you inquire) is the nudity shot, in which Hemsworth’s Thor is confronted by Russell Crowe’s Zeus. When speaking to Stephen Colbert(opens in a new tab), Waititi explained that the particular scene was intended to honor the amount of work Hemsworth does to build into the role, which is why it’s included. Whatever the reason, we’re guessing lots of Hemsworth lovers will thrill to see the film without pixelation when the film is released.
Also, make sure to take a look at some TV ads which have been released prior to the film’s release. Check out the hilarious Speech teaser(opens in a new tab) or play your Team trailer(opens in a new tab) through the links. You can also go to the Legacy of Thor featurette(opens in new tab).

Russell Crowe as Zeus
Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster
Jaime Alexander as Sif
Sean Gunn as Kraglin
Matt Damon as actor Loki
Liam Hemsworth as actor Thor
Sam Neill as actor Odin
Melissa McCarthy as actor Hela
Unexpectedly, Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor. A few Of the New Asgardian friends will be assuring Odinson and Tessa Thompson reprises her role as Valkyrie as well as director Taika Waititi returning to his suit of performance capture to play the wannabe revolutionary Korg. As per Reddit(opens in a new tab) Hemsworth’s son Tristan is the character who plays the boy character of Norse God in this film.
The Guardians of the Galaxy will also be within Thor: Love and Thunder it’s not a huge surprise. Avengers: Endgame, well it concluded with Thor with Marvel’s most loved group of a-holes. Therefore, they’ll appear in some form. As per MCU leaker NoobMaster69(opens in a new tab) The characters will only be seen within approximately 15 minutes of footage. As per Guardians Director James Gunn(opens in a new tab) There were some items that were “adjusted” – likely from the perspective of plot and character in order to make their role as characters in Thor 4 tie into Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.
Natalie Portman also returns as Doctor Jane Foster, with the actress confirming her role following a brief conversation with Waititi (per Variety(opens new tab) a new tab)) in the event that she was able to reinvent her character. Naturally, one of the changes resulted in Portman building up some serious strength for the role and Portman said to Variety(opens in a new tab) that it was “an amazing challenge” to increase her size to play Foster’s superpowered alter ego.
In Thor and its much-maligned sequel Thor: The Dark World, Portman wasn’t involved in Thor: Ragnarok, with Thor taking the bulk of the film on the planet of Sakaar. In the upcoming film, Porter will be back with a redesigned part as the titular character in Thor: Love and Thunder and will be seen with Foster wearing Mjolnir and wearing the thunder goddess’s mantle.
And, thanks to some movie-making art, Portman will be able to actually stand shoulder-to-shoulder alongside Hemsworth’s Thor in the film – with the actress explaining the process of growing in height in order to do this: “We’d rehearse the scene, they’d see the path, and then they’d build a path that was like one foot off the ground or whatever, and I would just walk on that.”
Another Ragnarok absentee who is making a comeback one of the Ragnarok absentees making a comeback is Jaimie Alexander. Alexander is back as the Asgardian warrior Sif. Her absence was due to the fact that her usual sidekicks – three warriors Warriors Three – were bumped off in Ragnarok however she made a appear in the fourth episode of Loki’s.
In the meantime former Batman actor Christian Bale becomes the latest actor to be cast in roles as the DC as well as Marvel characters, taking on the role of villain Gorr The God Butcher. As a comic character, Gorr acquires divine abilities through a series of tragic events and decides to cleanse the world from gods whenever he comes across the gods.
However, Taika Waititi believes that Bale’s Gorr is “probably one of the best villains that’s Marvel’s had in their films”
For Bale, his character, the well-known actor has told the audience in Total Film(opens in a new tab) that he got inspiration from Nosferatu to portray his character. In addition, Bale’s Gorr almost was following in the Stranger Things 4’s steps by dancing to the tune of a Kate Bush song. But, Waititi and Bale couldn’t figure out how to integrate this into the end of the movie. All sad faces.
There will also be cameos from Luke Hemsworth, Matt Damon, and Sam Neill, returning as actors portraying Thor, Loki and Odin in an in-movie production that retells the tale of Asgard. Melissa McCarthy is also rumored to play Hela (per Entertainment Tonight Canada(opens in a new tab)) in this stage play recreation. McCarthy’s partner Ben Falcone, singer Jenny Morris as well as Sir Simon Beale (Mary Queen of Scots, Penny Dreadful) have been cast in the unspecified roles and Comicbook.com.
The only Thor regular who isn’t in the MCU to do harm is Loki. The trickster god was killed at the end of Avengers: Infinity War but as we observed the show Endgame and Loki’s very own TV show, he’s technically with the MCU. It’s actually in the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. However, don’t count on to see him in the film in the film, as actor Tom Hiddleston stating that he isn’t going to appear in an interview scheduled for June 2021. Hiddleston has since confirmed that he will not make an appearance.
For those who might (or could not) make an appearance, prominent Marvel leaker MyTimeToShineHello claims the possibility that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was supposed to make an appearance(opens in a new tab) and, even though that could not have been the situation, a different insider from Greatphase(opens in a new tab) claims that Captain Marvel will appear. Put your money on who will be proved to be right.
Based on a fresh image that Marvel released on May 16th, the appearance of Bast in the film is confirmed. The image depicts Sabet’s Bast looking out over Jane Foster and Valkyrie in what we think is an image of the Parliament of Pantheons, with Odd Studio – the prosthetics company behind Thor 4 – confirming that Bast appears in the film (thanks for the Black Panther News Twitter fan account. It’s possible, therefore, Thor’s next adventure could tie in with Black Panther 2. Thor is also related to the Egyptian God of Moon, also known as Khonshu and is a key character in Moon Knight also, meaning that the rumored unconnected Marvel show may be linked very closely with other MCU projects in the end.
Furthermore, Marvel leaker KC Walsh(opens in a new tab) has denied the possibility that Knull, another well-known Marvel superhero is set to appear as a villain in Thor: Love and Thunder. Also, Peter Dinklage has teased the possibility of his appearance after his MCU character Eitri Eitri has helped Thor create Stormbreaker during Avengers: Infinity War. In an interview with Empire(opens in a new tab) Dinklage stated: “Well, there’s another Thor movie there, isn’t there? Coming out that Taika’s directed. But, I didn’t say anything. I didn’t say anything.” Take a look, then.
On the other hand, on the rumor front, MCU insider Daniel Richtmann has stated the possibility that Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey will be appearing. There’s no confirmation about who she’ll be playing but we’re guessing it’s a different Greek god. Perhaps Zeus is his wife Hera? We first heard about it In the event that it’s true.
THE THOR THE LOVE AND THUNDER STORY:
Thor: Love and Thunder story: what’s the story?
Here’s the official synopsis of the plot provided by Marvel Studios: “Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) embarking on a trip unlike anything else he’s been through and a search for inner peace. However, his retirement is disrupted by a galactic villain named Gorr The God Butcher (Christian Bale) who is seeking to end the reign of gods.
“To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”
The film is not surprising, Thor: Love and Thunder is set in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, with Thor being overweight and collaborating together with Guardians of the Galaxy before the two embark for an intergalactic journey. The film is marketed in the genre of romantic comedies directed by Waititi and also said to Fandango(opens in a new tab) that An Officer and a Gentleman as well as Bob Seger songs, chiefly played a role in the film’s plot.
The official synopsis of the plot, the teaser trailer and Waititi’s remarks aside, however, Marvel is understandably (and justly) playing cards very carefully regarding Thor 4’s broader storyline. But that shouldn’t hinder us from thinking about how the story will play out.
As we can see in the trailer teaser it appears that he’s doing the tough yards (with chains that are seriously heavy combat ropes) to get back in form. You can expect a montage of training, like the Rocky films, to be featured in the film’s opening part.
However, before that it appears that Thor requires a kick to the butt in order to get back to the (hammer) feeling of being an hero. As per the descriptions of the piece that’s part of Thor 4 products (thanks for Reddit(opens in a new tab) for the information) It’s the Guardians that must “convince Thor to return to the battlefield”. It seems that they’ll succeed as well, and could cause Thor being an Ravager for a time before heading off for a different, more Gorr-based adventures with Korg and the rest of his team.
We also know that Love and Thunder has been an inspiration for The Mighty Thor comics, which were written by author Jason Aaron. In addition, Aaron has confirmed that Aaron was the principal consultant(opens in a new tab) on Love and Thunder. In light of the fact that Marvel Studios hasn’t always asked its artists, writers, and comic book experts to contribute to the development of a film it’s a pleasant thing to hear.
As for the series itself, in Aaron’s story, Thor loses the ability to lift Mjolnir and Jane Foster assumes his mantle while fighting the disease in human form. “When we were shooting Ragnarok, I was reading one storyline by Jason Aaron, The Mighty Thor,” Taika Waititi told the crowd in the opening of San Diego Comic Con 2020 (per Deadline(opens in a new page)). “And for those of you who know that storyline, it’s incredible, it’s full of emotion, love and thunder, and it introduces, for the first time, female Thor.”
Similar to how Thor: Ragnarok only superficially made reference to it was only superficially referencing the Planet Hulk storyline from Marvel’s comics, we’d be a bit surprised to find out that Love and Thunder is a literal adaptation of the Mighty Thor series. But, Portman did confirm in an upcoming Yahoo interview, that “[Jane]’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side” and suggested that the film will draw an important inspiration from comics.
Foster is also expected to be in a position to control Mjolnir’s many parts – following the way Thor’s sister Hela has destroyed the mjolnir in Ragnarok according to what the trailer portrays. The actor elaborated on how Foster’s combat style differs from Thor’s Waititi spoke of the dancing talents of Portman as an important influence(opens in a new tab) that influenced Thor’s seemingly balletic moves.
In a conversation about their relationship following their reunion, Waititi told Empire magazine(opens in a new tab): “It’s been about eight years [since they last spoke]. She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindf**k for Thor.”
However, Waititi has previously told Collider that Thor 4 is “so over the top now in the very best way. It makes Ragnarok seem like a real run-of-the-mill, very safe film…this new film feels like we asked a bunch of 10-year-olds what should be in a movie and just said yes to everything.”
He’s since highlighted Thor Love and Thunder’s raunchy quality in an interview Empire(opens in a new tab) and said: “I’ve done some crazy stuff during my time. I’ve been through, say 10 lives, and this is the most insane experience I’ve had. If you were to write down every single element of the film and it didn’t make sense, then you’re not going to understand. It’s almost as if it’s not supposed to be made. If you entered the room and said to yourself”I want this and that and this. Who’s in it? The people in it. What do you plan to name this? Love and Thunder. You’d never again work. Maybe I won’t again after this …”
The director is also not shying away from the main love story this suggests Thor 4 could be the first MCU romance film. “What I wanted to do from the beginning was to ask, ‘What are people expecting the least from this franchise?'” Waititi said to Wired(opens in a new tab). “Oh, I know – full-blown love story!” He also said to BBC News(opens in a new tab) that the story can be described as “very romantic”.
In a discussion on the subject that love is a central theme, Waititi revealed to Empire(opens the new tab): “I wanted to embrace this thing that I was always a bit dismissive of, and explore this idea of love, and show characters who do believe in love. On paper, it feels kinds of cringy to me, but there’s a way of doing it with cool characters making a cool movie, and also having a thing that no fan ever wants in a superhero movie, which is people talking about love, and characters kissing.”
The photos of the set below, which were tweeted from Thor: Love and Thunder News highlight the love story aspect. It’s also believed that the hairstyles of the couple suggest that these are flashbacks to The Dark World era, which means there will be flashbacks that will be featured in the film. This has proven by Portman as well who has stated in D23 publication (via the Direct(opens in a new tab)): “There actually wasn’t a whole lot of evidence to definitively say, ‘This is how they broke up. This is what happened.’ It was left open for interpretation, which was great because it allowed us to go on this fun journey; ‘What did their relationship look like when they were together? What did it look like when they were breaking up? Why did they break up?’ It’s some of the funniest stuff in the film.”
Apart from its positioning as a romantic comedy, Waititi sees it as the first “midlife crisis” film that Marvel has ever made (per EW(opens in a new tab)). Expect to see some profound, meaningful themes to be explored alongside the usual laughs.
In addition, Valkyrie is the ruler of New Asgard, a seaside village located on the earth. Based on the teaser trailer, the Asgardians have a new home that is also a tourist attraction(opens in a new tab) and could be a cause of concern for energy firms. We can see Valkyrie working with a variety of businesses that include the evil Roxxon corporation, which we first saw in the 2008 film Iron Man. Could it be that certain firms perceive New Asgard as an illegal settlement that’s taking electricity from them, without payment? If so this, then it could explain why Roxxon and its associates have stepped into trouble.
This isn’t the only thing that Valkyrie faces. According to the leak of a LEGO sets (thanks to Marvel News Twitter fan account(opens in a new tab) for the tip), Gorr will attack the Asgardians the new earth-bound city. The report is backed by the Cosmic Circus(opens in a new tab) who suggest that the goofy monster from the LEGO set may appear in the movie. In light of the fact that LEGO sets aren’t the only way to tease what’s coming in the coming Marvel films we’re taking it with a grain of salt at the moment. We’re sure Gorr will be searching for of Thor in the course of his ‘god-extinction’ mission and with Thor as well as Jane Foster – showing up to stop Gorr’s assault. According to NoobMaster69(opens in a new tab) the story of Gorr’s birth has been tweaked slightly to fit into Thor 4, however, it appears that the “general story beats” are in place.
To her credit, Valkyrie actor Tessa Thompson has spoken out about wanting to investigate the character’s sexuality in greater detail. The actress spoke to the Wrap(opens in a new tab), Thompson said it “totally exciting” that Valkyrie was the first LGBTQand MCU character. She also hinted that we might have her bisexuality discussed within Thor: Love and Thunder.
“If you look at the comics in the canon, there are so many queer characters! It’s hard because Taika Waititi and I would’ve even liked to go further,” Thompson explained. “But, in the context of the movies, there’s only so much we can do. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of time invested in love stories in Marvel movies in general. I think that will be a little different on the new Thor, which is exciting.”
In the wake of the Guardians being included in the film, Waititi tapped that movie series Director James Gunn for his thoughts about how to best utilize the Guardians in Thor 4’s story. When asked by a fan how much input he’d received regarding love and Thunder(opens in a new tab), Gunn replied: “Not much, and Taiki is doing a great job – the script is amazing. We talked before he started writing it about where the characters are & where they’re going & he read the script for Vol 3 & then I read his script & shared my thoughts.”
THE THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER MCU FUTURE
Could Thor” Love and Thunder” be the Norse god’s final MCU film?
Are we seeing the end of Thor’s Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure? (Image credit: Marvel Studios)
This isn’t clear as of now. In the years prior to Ragnarok’s release, Hemsworth had become tired in portraying the same somewhat sterile version of the character.
The revival of the superhero in Ragnarok also breathed fresh new life into this god of thunder with Hemsworth later speaking to the UK television program This Morning that He’d “play this character for as long as anyone would let me”.
On the other hand, Waititi suggests that the appearance of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor doesn’t automatically mean Thor’s MCU journey is at an end. “I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’,” the actor said to Total Film(opens in a new tab). “I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.”
Do we believe Hemsworth is going to end his MCU story? We’d be happy in the event that he does but it’ll likely be sad for him when Hemsworth eventually pulls to an end his performance of Thor. It’s likely that we might be seeing Hemsworth come back as a Thor version in the upcoming episodes in What If …?, Marvel’s animated anthology on Disney Plus. He was also voiced briefly in an alternate version of Thor named Frog Thor in Loki season 1 so there’s still an opportunity for him to play Thor even after he’s finished by live-action films. It will be interesting to see his future in MCU.
