The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 397 new members this year, including actors Kajol, Suriya, and directors Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas of the Writing With Fire fame.
The list includes artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures, according to a statement posted on the Academy’s website late Tuesday night.
The selection of members is based on professional qualifications, with a continued emphasis on representation, inclusion, and equity. The 2022 class is made up of 44 percent women, 37 percent members of underrepresented ethnic and racial groups, and 50 percent non-Americans, according to the Academy’s statement.
The actors’ branch has invited Kajol, the star of Hindi movies like My Name Is Khan and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Suriya, known for his work in Tamil cinema through movies like Jai Bhim and Soorarai Pottru.
The documentary branch includes Ghosh and Thomas, whose film Writing With Fire received an Academy Award nomination for best documentary feature.
Kagti, who is well-known for Hindi movies like Gold, Gully Boy, and Talaash, is about to join the writers’ branch.
A R Rahman, an Oscar winner, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Ali Afzal are all members of the Academy, as are the producers Aditya Chopra, Guneet Monga, Ekta Kapoor, and Shobha Kapoor.
